Barium sulphate is an important inorganic chemical material with good optical properties and chemical stability and unique characteristics of volume, quantum size, and interface effect. So it is widely used in coatings, plastics, paper, rubber, ink, pigments, and many more industries. Nano barium sulphate is a precipitated barium sulphate type with a high specific surface area, high activity, and good dispersion. It shows excellent performance when applied to composite materials.
Nano Barium Sulphate in Plastics
Adding nano barium sulphate to polymers to obtain composite materials with high strength and high toughness has received increasing attention. For example, nano barium sulphate can be added to polyethylene(PE), polypropylene(PP), polylactic acid(PLA), polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE), etc. In particular, the surface modification of nano barium sulphate can lead to significant improvement in the mechanical properties of these materials.
For most polymer composites, as the amount of modifier increases, the strength and toughness of the composite first increase and then decrease. This is because adding too much modifier will lead to multilayer physical adsorption on the surface of barium sulphate nanoparticles, so there can be a serious agglomeration phenomenon in the polymer. This will affect the mechanical properties of the end-use product. While adding inadequate modifier will increase the defects at the interface between barium sulphate nanoparticles and the polymer, which will also lead to the reduction of mechanical properties of the end-use product.
In addition to the above-mentioned surface modifier, the amount of barium sulphate is also an important factor that has a great influence on the mechanical properties of composites. This is because barium sulphate nanoparticles have great intensity, thus producing a certain strengthening effect on the material. However, when the content of nano barium sulphate is too high ( more than 4 % ), the agglomeration phenomenon and inorganic particles in the composite will increase the matrix defects, making the material easier to break. Therefore, the amount of barium sulphate must be controlled within the appropriate range.
Nano Barium Sulphate in Coatings
Nano barium sulphate is widely used in coatings as a functional filler and plays a very important role in improving the thickness, abrasion resistance, water resistance, heat resistance, surface hardness, and impact resistance of the coating film. In addition, because of its low oil absorption and high filling capacity, it can be used in water-based paint, primer, intermediate coating, and oil-based paint to reduce production costs. Replacing 10%~25% of titanium dioxide in water-based paints with nano barium sulphate can increase whiteness without affecting the covering ability.
Characteristics of nano barium sulphate for coatings:
- Ultrafine particle size and narrow particle size distribution
- High transparency in resin liquid
- Good dispersion in the base material
- Better dispersing ability used with organic pigments
- Excellent mechanical properties
Nano Barium Sulphate in Paper-making
Barium sulphate’s good physical and chemical stability, moderate hardness, high whiteness, and ability to absorb harmful rays make it an ideal filler for the paper-making industry.
For example, copying paper is a common school and office supply, but its surface is easy to decolorize. So it requires barium sulphate filler with a high oil absorption value, which can improve the ink absorption of the copying paper. And as the nano barium sulphate particle size is small and uniform, it can make the paper flatter and cause less abrasion to the machine.
Nano Barium Sulphate in Chemical Fibers
Viscose fiber, also known as artificial cotton, has similar properties to natural cotton fiber, such as anti-static, good moisture absorption, easy to dye, and easy textile process. As nano barium sulphate has a good nano effect, the nano barium sulphate – regenerated cellulose blended fiber made of the two as raw materials is a new type of composite fiber, which can maintain the unique properties of each component. Through the mutual synergistic effect of these two materials, the new composite fiber can compensate for the shortcomings of a single material, showing the better performance of a composite material.
